As part of the Digital Currency Council’s Continuing Education partnership with Inside Bitcoins, DCC’s CEO David Berger, had the opportunity to interview the thought leaders that will be speaking at the Inside Bitcoins Conference in Chicago on July 10-11, 2015. Today, we share an interview with Steven Michaels, President of the Digital Currency Institute and Founding Member of the San Diego Bitcoin Association.
David: Steven, Thanks your sharing your thoughts with us today. Could you tell us more about your work at the Digital Currency Institute? What are the goals of the organization?
Steven: Our goal is to train people who want to be full-time Bitcoin Consultants. Our emphasis is “one-on-one” training geared towards bitcoin wallet security and wealth preservation.
David: Your panel at Inside Bitcoins Chicago is focused on leadership in the industry. At the DCC, we’ve been focused heavily on the professionalization of the industry. We’ve established a set of industry standards for expertise across six core competencies. Do you agree with this approach?
Steven: Yes. I like the fact that one of your areas of focus is the “origins of bitcoin”. When a consultant understands these origins, beginning with the cypherpunks, they can develop an appreciation for the real reason behind bitcoin’s creation: Freedom. Bitcoin is not about cheaper transactions. It is about liberating the individual from tyranny.
David: When we were on a panel together at Inside Bitcoins New York, we discussed the pros and cons of investing in Bitcoin and the enterprises in the ecosystem. What do you tell friends who ask you about investing in Bitcoin?
Steven: I naturally point out the risks – specifically, the risks of holding fiat.
David: What do you see as the biggest challenges for the professionals building new enterprises in the Bitcoin ecosystem?
Steven: We are in a unique time where we are building things for people that they don’t yet realize they need. So the major challenge is education. If you are in the Bitcoin World right now you are a true pioneer. Don’t expect to see the fruits of your labor for a few years though.
David: What’s on the horizon for you? What can we look forward to seeing from Digital Currency Institute?
Steven: You will likely see mini-conferences focusing on the economic fundamentals of Bitcoin and why it will likely be the new, global reserve currency. This means we will be talking about investment potential, wallet security, and threats from political actors.
David: Thank you very much for your thoughts, Steven. I appreciate you sharing your insights.
Steve: Thank you! I’m excited to see what you are building with DCC and I look forward to seeing how our organizations can compliment each other.
