Gil: My associate Aaron Turner came back from a payment conference (when we are not talking bitcoin our day job is covering payments companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal) and insisted bitcoin was by far the most interesting development in payments. Around the same time I happened to sit in on a meeting with Brock Pierce. I entered the meeting completely skeptical and left realizing this is something I need to learn a lot more about.

Dan: Can you tell us a little about why you got involved in Bitcoin and digital currencies?

Peter: I’m a long time entrepreneur and student of finance markets. I first got involved with Bitcoins at the end of 2012. I bought some early and sold enough to take my Fiance to southern France. It was a great introduction for both of us. Later in 2013, I was an early contributor to a Bitcoin mining company in Austin. It was a complete whirlwind and gave me an opportunity to learn manufacturing, procurement, and logistics in this very specialized niche.

We became great friends and by osmosis I learned a lot about bitcoin. As a startup attorney, I naturally get excited about new technology. After the run up in March of 2013, I dedicated the next 6 months to doing nothing but learning about the technology and the regulatory environment.

Luke: Bitcoin kept coming up in conversations when I’d ask investors and entrepreneurs for a business topic they didn’t understand, so it became a challenge to learn about it, understand it, and see its potential. Then I saw a Wall Street Journal article about bitcoin ATMs and that really opened my eyes to the potential of digital currency.

When I began to look for a new role, I ended up connecting and interviewing with our founder, Barry Silbert. He and I share the same alma mater and his enthusiasm for bitcoin’s potential instantly rubbed off on me. Since then, I haven’t looked back.

Sarah: Tell us about how and why you got into Bitcoin and digital currencies.

Brian: When I first discovered Bitcoin I was a skeptic, I thought it was a bubble that could rival Dutch Tulipmania…so I bought some bitcoins. I wanted to speculate on the bubble and hopefully be long gone before it burst – this plan only half worked. Within in week my investment had doubled, but it only took a few days for it to half. The Chinese government had begun its restriction of bitcoin capital flows and I was left holding bitcoins…and I really had no idea what they were.

Sarah: Tell us about how and why you got involved in Bitcoin and digital currencies.

Tone: I first heard about Bitcoin in early 2011 when Wikileaks began accepting donations as they were unfairly cut off from financing by the US Government. I took a look at it again in 2012 after hearing about it some more in the alternative media but getting involved in mining was not something I had time to investigate further. It was in the first quarter of 2013 during the mess in Europe as the Cyprus banking system got shot down I took a serious look at what Bitcoin was really about and it just clicked. By then Local Bitcoins was very popular and I immediately set out to find a dealer because I could not wait on the sidelines anymore.

Sarah: Tell us about how and why you got involved in Bitcoin and digital currencies.

Christopher: I published my first legal article about bitcoin in January 2011 which discussed “Will Your Law Firm Accept Bitcoin?” There were no lawyers in the virtual currency space at that point in time. About two years ago, I started getting emails from people looking for legal help who had found my old article. I was hooked. Since then, we’ve helped one bitcoin ATM company get registered and licensed in Florida, another virtual client launch their alt-coin, and several clients with Terms and Conditions and litigation.

As part of the Digital Currency Council’s Continuing Education partnership with Virtual Currency Today, the DCC’s Vice President, Sarah Martin, had the opportunity to interview the thought leaders that will be speaking at the Virtual Currency Today Summit on April 29, 2015. Today, we share insights from interviews George Peabody of Glenbrook Partners.

Sarah: Tell me about how and why you got involved in Bitcoin and digital currencies.

George: At Glenbrook, we’re payments geeks. That’s all we do so engaging with digital currencies was immediately on our agenda. We work across the payments value chain, with merchants and businesses, tech providers, acquirers, card networks, and issuers. We provide payment strategy consulting and all of them are asking us to help them sort out their digital currency payment plans.

Personally, I’ve been intrigued with the application of micropayments to solve issues like spam, WiFi access, and how to meter and monetize community solar generation. I’m also excited about opportunities to using blockchain technologies in the area of online identity and access.
